Rural Travel Guide officially launches

Content-forward platform will give back to rural tourism industry.

Britain’s first platform dedicated entirely to rural tourism officially launched at the Farm Business Innovation Show last week.

The Rural Travel Guide ( was founded in 2017 and has been busily supporting the rural tourism industry behind the scenes ever since, picking up the pace during the pandemic.

Having put launch plans on hold for the last 18-months, founder and editor Megan Allen says the team are really excited to begin building relationships with the wider tourism community.

“In 2017, I saw a gap in the market for a digital magazine that specialised in the rural tourism sector,” she explains. “As a keen UK traveller myself, I originally started the website as a hobby but had intended to launch as a business in Spring 2020. Obviously Covid-19 put a stop to that, so instead we offered free listings in our directory to rural businesses throughout 2020 to give them an extra voice.”

Megan, a journalist and PR who has specialised in rural tourism, food and farming for the last decade says the site brings together everything that makes the British countryside an ideal place to visit.

The magazine publishes news, features, reviews and events highlighting the best of Britain for free but is supported through an online directory of businesses that pay an annual subscription of £365 with no other fees or commissions. Businesses featured in the directory, which include accommodation, food and drink, hospitality and days out, will be supported in digital articles, on social media and through the site’s own PR activities.

Megan added: “We’re also giving back to tourism as much as we can. Not only do we fully support the book direct movement, ensuring the best deals for businesses we work with, for every listing on the guide, we’ve committed to plant a tree in The National Forest in Leicestershire as we want to create sustainable tourism practices that will benefit generations to come.

“Our team is passionate about the rural tourism industry; we’re all keen travellers ourselves and have diverse interests but I will be commissioning articles from other writers too, ensuring we’re representative of tourists across the country.”

The Guide launched at The Farm Business Innovation Show at the NEC in Birmingham on the 10th and 11th November and Megan says they are looking forward to finally being able to talk to people face to face about their plans.

“As far as I know, we’re the only content-forward digital platform dedicated entirely to rural tourism and while there are some brilliant listing sites out there that promote one aspect of the industry, we’re bringing it all together under one roof to inspire rural tourists past, present and future,” Megan added.

“The people we spoke to at the Farm Business Innovation Show were really interested in what we’re doing and seemed quite excited that we have a different approach.

About the Rural Travel Guide:

The Rural Travel Guide was founded as a travel news and features website by rural tourism PR specialist and writer Megan Allen, who realised there wasn’t a platform out there that fully catered to her clients. When Megan was undergoing IVF treatment in 2017, she needed a creative outlet and began. Due to the success of her treatment, plans were put on hold until 2020 when the platform was due to officially launch its online business directory to support its own development. But when the pandemic shut down the tourism sector, Megan instead chose to list businesses for free – giving them a voice and encouraging tourists to #VisitRuralBritain
The site features news, features, events and reviews across accommodation, food and drink, hospitality and experiences across the rural United Kingdom.

The team at The Rural Travel Guide are passionate about building and supporting the rural tourism industry and making it sustainable for generations to come. Not only do they support the #BookDirect movement, encouraging tourists to book with businesses directly and avoiding additional costs for both parties, they are planting a tree in The National Forest in Leicestershire for every new directory listing added to the site each year.
